Day 15 - 30 Days Wild - shield bug frolics

I walked out into my garden this morning before work and was confronted by loads of green shield bugs mating in a nearby lilac bush. There were literally hundreds of them all paired up and having a whale of a time.

I see these bugs all the time in the garden but don't know much about them - with a bit of research these creatures are fascinating!

...and here's another pair!

Five facts about the green shield bug:

  1. It is often called the Green Stink Bug - it produces a foul smelling liquid when in danger and only has a few natural enemies.
  2. They mate by contacting their rears together .
  3. It's hard to tell the difference between the males and females
  4. In Mexico they are eaten both live and cooked - their pungent odour gives a dish an aromatic flavour. (yuk!)
So my random act of wildness for day 15 was to study the Green Shield Bug.
